Jean Paul Gaultier in SF

Admiration, amazement, and inspiration are the three words that would best describe my feelings after the press preview of Jean Paul Gaultier’s exhibit “From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” at the de Young museum last Thursday. It was such a treat to hear him describe the exhibit himself and how his early years helped him become the designer he is today.

Some interesting personal stories from Mr. Gaultier:
- As a little boy he didn’t have any dolls, so his first subject that he designed for was a little stuffed bear “Nana” which is shown at the right wearing his first “prototype” of the cone bra Madonna would later wear (bits of paper formed into cones).
- He mentioned always having a cat, and one day looking at the can of cat food (or “meat for the cat” as he called it) and thinking how beautiful it was – that if he dipped it in silver it could become a really cool bracelet (shown below – “Tin Can” jewelry). This later became the idea behind his perfume packaging (a can for beans that is dipped in silver as he describes it).

Below is video footage taken during his talk at the press preview, where he describes how he came up with the idea for the “living” mannequins, why he likes models with personality, and his views on women and femininity.

And here is Mr. Gaultier after the talk (being mobbed by the press) and my friend and I (I’m on the right) posing with Mr. Gaultier’s original male model muse who was also in attendance.

Jean Paul Gaultier left a love note to SF on the wall

Some additional photos from the exhibit – I don’t want to spoil it all though, definitely go see it for yourself, it’s worth it!

And lastly, here’s a quick glimpse of the “talking” mannequins that you’ll see in the exhibit – this one is Jean Paul Gaultier himself! The uses video projection technology allows for the mannequins to come alive and speak, sing, blink, and even blow a kiss or two at you ;)

A “Cheeky” Behind

I was browsing through the local Malia Mills store not too long ago (they provided the adorable swim caps for my last shoot here) when I came across a swim bottom set up in a display case. As you can imagine, it was no ordinary bottom, but a swarovski crystal adorned suit custom-made for the Duchess of Cambridge. Well, I’m not sure that she actually ordered it, but what a cute way to showcase their custom suits!

You can choose from the different bottom styles they offer and then add an embellishment of your choice – your name, a motto, your favorite team etc. (I love it for a wedding shower gift that the bride can wear on her honeymoon). I’ve seen these before, but they’re usually made from cheap materials, so it’s great to see Malia Mills is elevating it with quality fabric and swarovski crystals.

Who knows, but you just might see Kate frolicking on a beach soon, proudly announcing her new name…from behind.

Lip Service: 5 Must-Have Lip Products

Lip products are like shoes to girls – you can never seem to have too many, and there’s always an excuse for more. But when do you reach the point where it just might be time to re-evaluate that overflowing drawer of makeup?

I had actually purged my collection of glosses, lipsticks, and chapsticks right before I moved back in August, and still have managed to accumulate 28…wait, 29 (just found another in my purse). Is there really a need for 29 different types of lip product? Granted, many I somehow managed to get for free for one reason or another (and why turn down free stuff?!), but I definitely don’t use all of them on a regular basis.

My co-worker and I were discussing this the other day when she dumped out five glosses from her purse and said she had three more in her desk. I only had a couple that day because I had my little cross-body purse with me. Why do we do this? I think it boils down to the fact that people want “latest and greatest” product. “Oh, you say it’s anti-aging? It will plump my lips? It has flecks of real gold in it? I can get vitamins through it?” It’s tempting, but in my opinion, a woman really only needs five types of lip products:

  1. A Chapstick/Lip balm (Cherry Carmex tube, SPF 15) – something to moisturize and protect lips (added SPF is always a plus)
  2. A Neutral Day Gloss (Nars Lipgloss in Turkish Delight) – an everyday gloss close to your natural lip color
  3. A Shimmery/Sparkly Gloss (Being True Satin Lip Shine in Pretty) – a little sparkle to add dimension to a matte lipstick or just for fun (bonus: this gloss has peppermint and caffeine to plump lips)
  4. A Fun Night Color (Nars Lipgloss in Angelika) – A bright pop of color for evening (I’ve turned many friends onto this bright pink gloss)
  5. A Classic Red Lipstick (Vincent Longo Rejuvenating Velvet Riche Lipstick in Ignition) – A bold red that fits your skin tone for those nights you just need a little extra (I spent an hour running around Sephora one day testing every shade to find this red)

That being said, I’ve really been wanting a coconut-flavored gloss…and I think Nars has a new lip gloss line…

Tracy Reese’s Chic Picnique

Seeing as picnicking in the park on sunny days with some wine and hors d’oeuvres is one of my favorite activities, I think this adorably chic picnic basket needs to move onto my virtual “wish list.” Not to mention that it happens to be designed by one of my favorite designers (Tracy Reese), and includes two bottles of wine from one of my favorite wineries (Clos du Bois). It’s as if someone psychically read my thoughts and came up with the ultimate “Veronica’s ideal picnic” combination.

The basket is lined with the iconic print “Summer Bloom” from Reese’s archival collection and comes with two napkins in the print, two wines glasses, a corkscrew, a bottle stopper, and two bottles of Clos du Bois wine (on the website it says it includes the 2009 Clos du Bois Cabernet Sauvignon North Coast and the 2010 Clos du Bois Chardonnay North Coast). You can purchase the basket and get more information on it here.

Picnics just got a lot more stylish thanks to Tracy Reese!

*On a side note, if you love white wines with a hint of sweetness (like a Sauvignon Blanc), I highly recommend the 2008 Clos du Bois Malvasia Bianca Russian River Valley. I have gone tasting at Clos du Bois several times now, and each time this wine is always the overall group favorite.

New Styling Work! “Spring In Bloom”

I shared some behind-the-scenes sneak preview photos a couple of weeks ago (here) of the Spring Fashion shoot I was producing and styling, and now it’s out on newsstands! Spring is all about florals, with colors ranging from pale pink to bright tangerine and yellow. I decided to re-create a fun ladies garden party at the Marin Art and Garden Center, and the models did a fantastic job of smiling and laughing through the frigid January temperatures in Spring clothes (especially the swimsuits!).

I have to say, definitely the most satisfying part of styling is getting to see the results of all of my hard work come together in photos!
For credit info on the clothing and accessories, click here, and below I added some more of my behind the scenes images to give you a glimpse of how it all comes together.

Oscar Red Carpet: Best Dressed 2012

Since I have already covered the Grammys and the Golden Globes (here and here), I thought it was only appropriate to comment on the most important red carpet fashion, the Oscars! I thought I would do a “Best and Worst dressed” like my previous posts, but everyone played it so safe last night it made it hard to come up with any “worst.” So, I’m just going to name some best dressed and point out the top trends.

The Trends

The trend I immediately saw emerging on the red carpet was a draped one-shoulder (as seen on Stacy Keibler, Kate Mara, and Missi Pyle). The much-talked-about peplum trend for Spring also was present on Tina Fey and Michelle Williams.

I was hoping for some pops of color, but the carpet was mostly dominated by light-colored gowns in white, nude, or metallics with a couple of black and red gowns thrown in. Can you imagine how fab Rooney Mara would have looked in a fuchsia gown? Sigh, o well.

The Best

Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab Couture: One of the first stars I saw on the red carpet – glittering snow-white perfection with a fashion-forward cap sleeve.

Stacy Keibler in Marchesa: She looked radiant in the draped gold metallic gown. Even the rose detail on the hip that would have probably bothered me on anyone else somehow worked on her.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji: Octavia has been wearing Tadashi Shoji this whole awards season and I think they saved the best for last – she looked fantastic in this white beaded gown that gathered in the middle, accentuating her waist perfectly.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace: Sticking the leg out the whole night was a bit of overkill, but she looked stunning as always. It was nice to see her in some volume too, rather than the usual slinky gowns she’s been sporting.

Shailene Woodley in Valentino Couture – The cutouts on the front of the dress made it edgy enough to work with long sleeves and not look too matronly.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford: Who thought a cape would work so well on the red carpet? The gown was architectural perfection without a hint of a wrinkle or pucker in the fabric.

Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton: I am so happy she went for a more youthful look this time around – the silhouette worked great on her and the bow brooch was a very cute touch.

Penelope Cruz in Armani Prive: This wasn’t the most exciting gown, but it was very classic and the icy-blue color was fantastic on her.

And I don’t think I can cover the Oscar red carpet without mentioning the incident with Ryan Seacrest and “The Dictator” Sasha Baron Cohen. For those of you that didn’t watch, Ryan was interviewing Sasha when he all of a sudden dumped “ashes” from an urn he was carrying around all over Ryan’s tux. Ryan stayed classy, but you could tell he was kind of pissed off at the situation. Good promo for Sasha’s new movie though!

In the Bag: Daily Makeup Essentials

I’m a total beauty junkie, and have tried hundreds of different makeup products over the years (not to mention my days at a wellness/beauty magazine gave me the access to try endless amounts of expensive makeup and skincare products). However, I’ve managed to find some favorites and have stayed true to them through several purchases now (you know, when you run out of a product and decide if you want to stick with it or try something else – these have remained through that tough decision). Below are my faves, let me know what yours are!

  1. Benefit High Brow glow $20 – A shimmery highlighter that I use under the brow bone and at the inside corner of my eye to add dimension and light.
  2. Benefit They’re Real! mascara $22 – After my miracle mascara (Lancome Fatale) was discontinued, I went on a long hunt for a similar alternative. This one creates extra length and helps give my stick-straight lashes a slight curve.
  3. Benefit Play Sticks $34 – A stick concealer (creme-to-powder) that works to cover under-eye circles and blemishes. Easy to use and provides good coverage.
  4. Dior Style Liner $34 – The PERFECT liquid black eyeliner. I can’t say enough about it – I have tried them all and this is by far the best. The thin precision tip draws a smooth line and it will not budge all day.
  5. Bare Minerals Matte SPF 15 Foundation $28 – I like the new matte version better than the original formula (less sheen). Provides a light coverage for everyday wear.
  6. Bare Minerals SPF 20 Concealer $18 – I use this as an extra concealer over the Play Sticks – this one finishes and sets the concealer.
  7. Anastasia Brow Powder Duo $22 – The duo of colors (I have the Medium Brown) allows for a custom color blend when filling in brows.
  8. Tarte Eyelash curler $15 (price includes mascara) – Curls lashes well and have never had problems with it pulling out lashes like others can tend to do.
  9. Nars Duo eyeshadow in All About Eve $34 – Great neutral colors – the lighter color on the right is a great all-over eye color, and the more shimmery color on the left side works well on just the lid.
  10. Benefit Hoola bronzing powder $28 – The best bronzer I have found – absolutely no shimmer in it, which is perfect for a natural bronzed look. Use just a bit for an everyday glow, or layer it on for a faux “vacation tan.”

*I realized I forgot to include another favorite (because it’s always in my purse rather than my makeup bag), but Nars Lip Gloss in Turkish Delight is the prettiest pale pink – perfect for everyday wear and never too sticky.
