Style Q&A: Wide-Calf Boots

Wide-calf boots from (left to right) J.Crew, Wide Widths, and Piperlime

Q: I have wider, athletic calves and can never find boots to fit them. Do you know where I can find stylish and affordable boots that will work for larger calves?

A: That is a very common complaint from women and I’m surprised more companies don’t take notice. I’ve searched the web and have come up with the following sites:

JCrew.com – ($270-370) For those that might only need a little extra room, J.Crew offers most of their boots in the option to get them about 1″ wider (15 1/2″ to 16 1/2″).

Piperlime.com – ($75-$595, most priced at around $200) A variety of brands and widths, but pay attention because some are only classified as “extended-calf” because they have a bit more stretch, but still run relatively small. Product reviews on this website provide valuable insight into fit and quality.

WideWidths.com – ($130-$300) They carry brands such as Ros Hommerson, Naturalizer, David Tate and Blondo and offer quality boots with different width options specifically geared toward larger calves (15 1/2″ to 21″).

OldNavy.com – I found a very affordable pair of brown boots (seen at right) on this website for $50 and the reviews are very positive as far as sizing (17″). The boots are currently on backorder though, so order now to get them in time for the cold!
